  • we are not responsible for poor image quality due to poor quality monitors.
  • Each image is personally inspected for proper exposure, brightness, color, contrast, tone, clarity, sharpness, and cropping. Minor touchups are expected, and provided at no extra charge.
  • The amount of light and color of light will change slightly in each image, depending on where the shot was taken and where subjects were positioned in relation to the sun or light source.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you book a session with Lechnir Design Photography, expect to relax and have fun. This is a meaningful experience. Therefore, I do everything I can to provide you with an environment free of stress and tension where you can enjoy your photographic experience. After all, its about showing your best side, and that is exactly what I strive to have you do.

Whether doing indoor or outdoor portraits, you get to choose the location. If weather permits, almost any outdoor location is acceptable, but please be aware that shade must be available on bright sunny days. A favorite local park, playground, garden, beach, nature trail, or other natural setting is perfectly fine.

If weather is an issue, I prefer to photograph in your home if at all possible. Natural light is used most of the time. I may use a few simple instruments to help channel the light, but my equipment is mobile and travels well. We can also do the session in my home studio if you prefer, and studio lights can be used if necessary.

Please allow up to 1 to 2 hours for your portrait session (possibly longer for newborns and large groups). Children are encouraged to have a favorite toy or stuffed animal to make them feel more comfortable during the session.

A few changes of clothing is also acceptable. Please wear simple patterns or solid colors, and nothing too busy that might distract from the subject. Please be sure clothes are wrinkle-free as well. No other cameras or camcorders are permitted during the photo session.

It is my ultimate goal to give you results that are above and beyond your expectations.

PORTRAIT SESSION TIPS

Here are a few ideas that will help you choose the best clothes to wear in your senior portraits (but many of these apply to general portrait sessions as well).

Clothing Color and Patterns:
  • Medium to dark clothes look the best on dark backgrounds. This gives a more dramatic look.
  • Medium to light colors look the best on lighter colored backgrounds.
  • Stay away from white, light/pale yellow or other very light/pale colors outdoors. For outdoor portraits, be careful of bright greens as they often clash with the greens of leaves and grass. Black, Khaki, pink, orange, navy, tan, gold, burgundy, dark yellow are good outdoors.
  • Busy patterns and loud colors can be very distracting in your portraits. Avoid large and bold patterns that might tend to draw attention away from your face.
  • Use a variety of colors. If you only bring black, gray and white outfits for a 3-outfit session, it can be drab and boring. These are all good choices, but include some items of color as well.
  • Stay clear of stripes. However, large bold stripes of 5+ inches are acceptable. Small thin stripes do not photograph well. It is best to not use any stripes or solids with 1-2 stripes or lines.
Styles:
  • Choose a variety of outfits. Include both casual and more formal outfits in your portraits.
  • Long sleeve solids or very subtle prints are usually the most flattering in portraits.
  • Traditional styles will stand the test of time and keep your portrait looking fresh for years to come. Use styles and looks that will be in style next year as well as this summer. Your portrait may look dated and out of style in a year or two if clothing is too trendy. Classic solid sweaters will always be in style. Trendy summer tops may look out of place next summer.
  • Accessories:
  • Bring shoes and socks for each outfit that you plan to wear. Bare feet (girls) and sandals are no problem for casual clothes. Even if white socks are trendy, they do not photograph well. Darker socks are better.
  • Please wear a matching color belt with dress pants.
Common Problems to Avoid:
  • The most common problem is sunburn and tan lines from a tanning salon. Please keep out of the sun a week or two before your session. We often see uneven sunburn from guys who wear ball caps, peeling skin on noses from recent burns, raccoon eyes from those who were burned while wearing sunglasses, or strap lines on the shoulders of girls in a strapless formal dress or top. Sunburn, uneven tanning, and tan lines cannot be retouched.
  • Another common problem is wrinkled clothes or clothes that don’t fit. Please be sure your clothes are wrinkle-free, and that your shirt collar and sleeves fit. Shirt and tie should fit properly and your suit/sport coat should be the proper size.
Props:
  • Props can help to show your personality and record the types of activities you are involved in. Be sure to bring some of your own props to your portrait session.
  • Ideas for props include but are not limited to:
  • Musical Instruments
  • Vehicle (car/truck/bike/cart) This requires extra time and cost
  • Leather Jacket
  • Uniform/ball/helmet/shoes/stick/bat
  • Hat
  • Sports Equipment
  • Sunglasses
  • Poms, megaphone, lollies
Final Tips:
  • Due to lighting and the way I concentrate on bringing out your eyes, it is highly recommended to remove lenses. Your optometrist will do this for free if you are not able to do it yourself, or you can borrow a pair of empty frames from your optometrist that look similar to your own. They can often do this for free or a small $5.00 deposit that they refund when you return them.
  • Contacts can be worn. But if you can get by without them, your eyes will be less red and have more sparkle.
  • Long sleeve dresses and shirts are much better than short sleeves, especially for head and shoulder/ traditional poses.
  • Coordinate your outfit from head to toe. Keep the tonal range of clothing in the same group. Please keep lights together or darks together in the same outfit. Darker clothes minimize body size.
  • Please bring jewelry, especially your class ring.
  • If you are in sports, don't forget helmet and ball, hockey stick, etc. You often need to contact your school/coach weeks in advance to get jerseys and helmets during the summer. It is best to not delay in doing this.
  • You should wear your hair in your regular style. Guys should not have a fresh haircut, but should have a fresh shave. 5 o'clock shadow will show and can't be touched up. If you need a trim, have it done about a week before. Girls, it is not a good idea to get a new hairstyle that you've never used before.
  • Visene can be used for red eyes if you have allergies.
  • Heavier thicker materials will photograph and lay better. For example, a sweatshirt is much thicker and will photograph better than a t-shirt or button down cotton shirt. Button down shirts are fine if you put a sweater or suit or sport coat over them.
  • Simplicity is the key to a successful portrait. All elements come together to create the end result.
  • Get a good night's sleep, and be ready for a great portrait session!

How do I order prints?
WEDDING COUPLES AND HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: Do not order prints online. Please order prints from your proof book. All other clients, you can order prints by email or phone when you see your proofing gallery. If ordering by phone, call #608 #792 #9313. General policy is to order within 10 days of viewing your proofs. Your online gallery will be posted for 10 days, and then removed to make room for other galleries. If you need more time, let me know immediately.

Do you require a deposit?
Yes. A $50 non refundable deposit is required at the beginning of each session. For groups of 2 or more, it is $80. For senior portrait sessions, it is $100. This is your session fee. You can pay by cash or check at the start of the session or pay a deposit online by credit card HERE . This covers time and talent of the photographer, use of equipment, and processing of images. If you purchase a portrait package, the balance minus your deposit is required upon pickup of your final prints. All packages are priced to reflect a 25% discount off regular print prices. If you want to purchase prints individually, there is no minimum print purchase, and the $50 deposit is added to the total price of any prints. The session fee or total portrait collection fee (if you order a package) is due at the start of the scheduled session. My prices are obscenely low for the quality you get. My purpose is not to gouge you, but give you exceptional quality and service at a reasonable price.

What kind of camera do you use?
Canon 5D and a variety of Canon prime and zoom lenses.

Do you charge for travel?
If I travel more than 10 miles from La Crescent city limits, I charge 50 cents per mile to get to your location.

Do you have a studio?
Yes, I have a studio room in my home, but I rarely use it. If you want studio pics with lights and a backdrop, please ask. Otherwise, I would much rather prefer to shoot outdoors in a variety of locations.

Who owns the photos that you take?
I own the copyrights to any photos taken, always! This is the right of any photographer you hire. You can purchase the rights to print digital images from a CD, but I own the copyrights.

Do you have any assistants?
Mostly I work on my own. But I have part time paid assistants if the need arises, and sometimes my kids come with me and help with shoots on location.

Kendra - La Crescent, MN

"The pictures are incredible! Love, Love, Love!!! All really good shots you took! The dresser idea with the framed picture worked out great! I really like how they look! The very first picture of the gallery, oh man, Anna is adorable! The close-up shots of Anna on the bed, I can't get over how cute she is! All the pictures are fantastic! Thank you again for taking those pictures! Having high quality pictures of Anna are really priceless! I could fill up a bunch of picture frames and have Anna all around the house. If you couldn't tell, Melissa and I are very excited about the pictures! Seeing how Anna has changed in a few weeks from her first session to this one, is amazing! Take care, and thank you again!"
David and Melissa - Cashton, WI

"It was a pleasure to work with Nick during our recent family photo shoot summer 2012 as well as during earlier family photo sessions. The recent shoot included a large extended family and it did not phase Nick to work with such a large group or wide-range of ages. As always I was extremely impressed with the photos that came back -- excellent work at making us look good!!!!"
Tami - Dubuque, IA

"Nick contacted me regarding some nonprofit work he was involved with for New Horizon's Women's Shelter. He had contributed his professional photography for a calendar that would be sold with proceeds benefiting New Horizon's. I was in awe of his photography! His work was amazing and it made the job of designing the calendar a breeze. The only difficult part was deciding on which images to use, they were all so incredible! He really captures the true essence of each subject he photographs."
Renee - La Crosse, WI

"I hired Nick for portrait work and from start to finish, his work was flawless. He was professional, timely, creative, polished, and his communication was second to none. I followed this by arranging portrait sessions through my music studio. ALL customers were thrilled with his work!"
David - Onalaska, WI

"Nick perfectly captured my kids' personalities in his photography. He works hard to make sure the client is happy, both before, during and after the shoot. His prices are extremely reasonable in a very competitive market. I definitely recommend Nick as your photographer."
Tracy - La Crescent, MN

About The Photographer

My photography business grew from a passion to create outstanding photographs. Having grown up in a relatively large family, and now raising a family of my own, I learned to appreciate the value of a great photograph. After years of studying and practicing, I finally took the plunge to start my own business. And in 2005, Lechnir Design Photography was created.

Capturing a particular moment in time is not only a way to just look back on the past, but a way to treasure the experience of who we once were. That is why I believe having professional images of loved ones is so important. I take my work very seriously so that you are provided with excellent quality and fair prices. I also want to make sure you are comfortable and that you truly enjoy your photography session experience. I take great pride in treating you with complete respect and courtesy. I will do what it takes to earn your business.

I incorporate all kinds of things in my approach to capturing your special moments. For example, when photographing a child, I try to not only capture the child, but the essence of joy they feel about life and their surroundings. I want to preserve it as not only a gift to the parents, but also as a gift to the child as they grow and pass on their images to their children one day. It is my honor and privilege to be able to preserve your memories and make sure you treasure them for a lifetime!

What is Custom Photography?

The following is paraphrased from an article on http://www.professionalchildphotographer.com.

WHY DOES CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHY COST MORE?

The digital photography revolution has brought amazing flexibility and control for the hobbyist, the amateur, and the professional photographer. However, with flexibility there comes a price. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in equipment lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing, the time it takes to get an excellent image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 or less for a print at your local drugstore or discount department store, you may be wondering why you pay upwards of $25, 40, 50, 70, or 90 for a custom photography print, depending on the print size. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

"How in the world can you charge $25 for an 8by10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?" The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with time, equipment costs, artistic vision, reputation of the photographer, expertise, and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME OF THE CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

From a time perspective, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and is traveling to your session on location.

Here is just one example of how his time may be allocated:
  • 15-30 minutes for initial appointment to meet and greet client, gather information, and discuss any issues before the session.
  • 30-60 minutes session prep time, includes equipment and back up equipment checks and vehicle checks.
  • 10-30 minutes travel time to session (sometimes more).
  • 15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
  • 1-2 hours with client photographing subject (sometimes more).
  • 10-30 minutes travel time from session.
  • 30-45 minutes uploading images from camera to computer
  • 30-45 minutes time spent backing up original images
  • 5-10 hours editing and personally inspecting each image for proper exposure, color, clarity, and sharpness to present you with a diverse online or printed proof gallery
  • Once the customer order is decided, 1 hour getting images ready for ordering
  • 1 hour sorting through, checking order, and submitting order to lab
  • Once the order arrives from the lab, 30-60 minutes for client to pick up and inspect the product before taking home, or the product may be delivered
  • 30-60 minutes shipping product if client wishes to have their order mailed
  • Any additional phone time or time needed for ordering, appointment changes, shipment issues, quality issues, etc.
As you can see, average time for any given session ranges from 12-20 hours depending on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for a photo shoot, you are not just paying for the 1-2 hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-20 hours complete time for your session.

COSTS OF THE CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses, along with digital storage mediums and computer setup can run from $10,000-$30,000 depending on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100, there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 depending on the photographer.

There are also lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you.

There is much more, including costs of running a business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising and marketing, and costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES:

Often times clients will mention to their photographer that a studio in the mall or discount department store only charges $7.99 for an 8×10 or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized one-to-one service. According to several articles at the time, in February 2007 a rather well-known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple. You cannot make money on 99¢ "professional" prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough, those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait studios in the first place was to get you in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your "PORTRAITS" are considered the true "LOSS LEADER." Does that sound like someone you would want to entrust with your family heirlooms?

Going to a chain studio as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of one-to-one attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones "SAY CHEESE" experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, and having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to portray professionalism.

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work, it is necessary to have good reliable equipment, and to be reliable and dependable. This is how reputations are built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

I hope this article helps shed some light on WHY a custom photographer is a better choice for your family’s memories. The photographs that are produced as a result of the professionalism and dedication that your photographer has will be cherished for a lifetime (or more) and great thought and consideration should be placed into hiring who is right for your family’s most precious investment.
